About the master thesis:
Battery storage with grid following inverters can be used to provide frequency control, for example in the form of synthetic inertia or ancillary services such as FCR-N. However, the power response to a frequency change may affect the phase angle of the connection point in such a way that the frequency measurement is disturbed, which can cause instability. This is particularly a risk in a weak or islanded grid. The practical stability limits for different frequency control responses have been investigated in a previous master thesis at Solvina. Now is the time to put theory into practice.
Thesis Description
This thesis aims to:
1) Verify the previous results regarding stability in the frequency response control loop. This is done by implementing the response in a grid forming inverter in a lab, and hands-on testing with different grid conditions.
2) Develop a user interface for the inverter control such that frequency control with a grid forming inverter can be demonstrated for education purpose.
WHO ARE YOU?
For this thesis we are looking for one or two students with the following background:
✔MSc student within Electric Power Engineering or similar.
Special interest in the following areas is meriting and will be considered:
✔Power grid dynamics
✔Control theory
✔Battery storage and inverters
✔Matlab/Simulink programming
